Craftomation 101 Early Recipes Priority List

S/A/B ranks for the first hours on the ice—what to craft before you drown in manual combines.

Early Recipes Priority

Your first hours in Craftomation 101 are a race against cold friction: gather Base resources, unlock Yellow sparks of progress, then reach Blue steel and the first Gray buffers. This early-recipes priority list ranks what to craft soonest so you can keep CraftoMates busy instead of babysitting every stack. Pair it with the Getting Started guide, the full recipe list, and the later automation priority page once Fire is stable.

Ranks use S / A / B only. There is no combat. S means craft as soon as inputs exist. A means strong, but wait until the S chain is not starving. B means situational—useful for storage, cosmetics of progress, or side experiments.

Base resources you must respect

Everything starts from Base materials on the frozen planet: Stone, Soil, Iron, Ice, Copper Ore, Coal, Wood, Mushroom, and Moss. Do not treat them as infinite just because they sit on the ground. Early S-tier recipes burn Stone and Coal hard. Leave buffers for Spark → Fire and for Clay Brick / Coal Brick when you need Bonfire later.

Mouse drag-and-drop is how you move stacks and combine them—see the controls cheatsheet if the UI still feels slippery. Manual combines are fine for the first Spark; they become a trap once you need continuous Fire for Steel and Copper.

S-tier early recipes

Spark (Stone + Stone)

Spark is the cheapest ignition craft and the gateway into Yellow. Two Stone become Spark. Rank: S. Without Spark you cannot make Fire, and without Fire the Blue row (Steel, Glass, Copper) never opens. Keep a small Spark surplus near your first work area.

Fire (Spark + Coal)

Fire is the heartbeat of early Craftomation 101. Rank: S+ in practice—listed as S here. Coal plus Spark yields Fire, which then cooks Soil into Sand, Iron into Steel, Copper Ore into Copper, Ice into Water, and Sand into Glass. Automating Fire is so important it has its own guide: Automate Fire. Until that loop exists, craft Fire by hand whenever the pile dips.

Water (Ice + Fire)

Water unlocks Seeds, Primordial Ale at the Brewery, Battery recipes later, and many Gray/Green crafts. Rank: S. Ice is plentiful on a frozen world, but Fire is the scarce half—never drain your only Fire stack dry just to flood the map with Water you cannot store yet.

Steel (Iron + Fire)

Steel is the first Blue milestone. Rank: S once Fire is reliable. Steel doubles into Steel Plate, feeds Magnets, Bodies, Heads, and nearly every mid-game machine. If Iron is scarce, prioritize Steel over vanity Yellow crafts.

Seed (Water + Wood)

Seeds push organic growth and longer-term loops. Rank: S for players who want renewable Wood/Moss pressure relieved. If you are still fighting Fire uptime, finish Fire automation before mass Seeds.

A-tier early recipes

Sand (Soil + Fire) and Glass (Sand + Fire)

Sand is the bridge to Glass. Glass unlocks Radiolamp, Storage, and several Gray pieces. Rank: A. Craft enough Sand to feed one Glass batch, then pause until Storage or Radiolamp is on your short list.

Clay Brick (Soil + Stone) and Coal Brick (Stone + Coal)

Bricks look humble but Bonfire (Clay Brick + Coal) sits on the path to Furnace. Rank: A. Stock a modest brick chest; do not empty Stone reserves needed for Spark.

Moss Spore (Moss + Wood) and Spore (Mushroom + Wood)

Spore lines expand biology options and side crafting. Rank: A when Wood is comfortable, B if Wood is the bottleneck for Seeds. They are excellent “second hour” crafts after Fire and Water.

Wire (Copper + Copper) after Copper (Copper Ore + Fire)

Copper itself is Blue and Fire-gated; Wire from Copper + Copper enables Rotor and Chip chains. Rank Copper production A early, Wire A as soon as you eye Rotors or Chips. Do not mass-Wire before you have a Steel Plate plan.

Magnet (Iron + Steel) and Steel Plate (Steel + Steel)

Steel Plate and Magnet are the twin pillars under Charged Steelplate. Rank: A the moment you can spare Steel. Charged Steelplate (Steel Plate + Magnet) then unlocks Battery, Radiolamp, Heater, and more—see the upgrade path.

B-tier early recipes

Primordial Ale (Wood + Water at Brewery)

Fun, flavorful, and part of the ale family that continues in Gray. Rank: B for the first hours unless a quest or personal goal demands it. Brewery crafts are better once Water and Wood are automated.

Excess bricks and decorative surplus

Extra Coal Brick or Clay Brick beyond Bonfire needs is B. Storage space and attention are tighter than brick counts early.

Deep Green crafts (Chip, Body, Head, CraftoMate)

Technically reachable once Gray pieces exist, but they are not “early recipe” priorities for minute one. Treat full mate assembly as the climax of early→mid transition, covered in upgrade path and Feed robots.

Suggested first-hour craft order

  1. Gather Base piles with clear lanes for Stone, Coal, Ice, Iron, and Wood.
  2. Craft Spark → Fire; park Fire where you can see it.
  3. Make Water from Ice + Fire; keep Seeds ready when Wood allows.
  4. Smelt Steel; duplicate into Steel Plate when Iron allows.
  5. Cook Copper Ore → Copper → Wire when you need Rotor/Chip prep.
  6. Build Clay Brick + Coal toward Bonfire; plan Rotor + Bonfire → Furnace.
  7. Hand off Fire and feed chores to programs—Automate Fire and Feed robots.

Common early mistakes

  • Spark starvation: spending all Stone on bricks before Spark buffers exist.
  • Fire collapse: using the last Fire on Sand or Steel with no Spark+Coal refill queued.
  • Wire without plates: Copper sinks that never become Charged Steelplate.
  • Ignoring robots: crafting fancy Blue items while mates idle hungry—fix that with the feed guide.
  • Skipping Storage: Glass + Steel Plate Storage is an A/B borderline craft that becomes S the moment inventory chaos starts.

How this list connects to automation

Recipe priority and job priority are siblings. Once S-tier crafts are unlocked, stop combining them by hand. Move Fire, Water top-ups, and mate feeding into visual programs. The automation priority page ranks which loops to code first; this page ranks which products those loops should emit.

When you wake the volcano later with a Steam Battery drop, you will thank every early Fire and Tank decision you ranked correctly. Until then, keep this S/A/B card next to the recipes reference and the Priority Lists Hub.

Stay flexible. If Coal is everywhere and Iron is rare, lean harder into Fire products that do not need Steel. If Ice is awkward to haul, prioritize a Water buffer mate sooner. The tiers describe average first-hour value on a standard frozen start—not a single scripted speedrun.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

What is the single most important early recipe?

Fire (Spark + Coal). Almost every Blue and many Yellow crafts spend Fire. Automate it as soon as you can—see Automate Fire.

When should I craft Steel Plate?

As soon as Steel is stable and you are aiming at Magnets, Storage, Charged Steelplate, or mate bodies. It is A-tier early and becomes mandatory mid-game.

Are Seeds really S-tier?

Seeds are S if you want renewable organics quickly. If Fire uptime is still failing, treat Seeds as A until Automate Fire is done.

Where do CraftoMate parts rank?

Body, Head, and full CraftoMate are mid-chain goals, not minute-one crafts. Follow the upgrade path list after Charged Steelplate pieces exist.

Should I memorize every recipe?

No. Use this priority list for order, and keep the full color-row recipe list open for exact inputs.
