Build the spine once by hand, then automate:
- Copper = Copper Ore + Fire
- Steel Plate = Steel + Steel (Steel = Iron + Fire)

Upstream dependencies you cannot skip:
- Fire automation so copper/steel smelts and Water do not die together
- Charged Steelplate industry if you still need ordinary Batteries for more Bodies in parallel

Steam Batteries show up in several player-facing systems:
1. Cargo Body

2. Advanced heat tools
Steam Bonfire = Heater + Tank sits beside the Steam Battery story. Heaters need Charged Steelplate + Sand; Tanks need copper and plates. You may craft Steam Bonfires for denser heat while still stockpiling Steam Batteries for the volcano. Do not delete your ordinary Bonfire Fire loop when Steam Bonfires appear — regressions happen when advanced heat stalls (Terraforming).
3. Waking the volcano
Objectives ask you to drop Steam Batteries into the volcano. That is the canonical wake method used across this wiki and community guides. Treat Steam Batteries as expedition munitions: craft extras, stage them near the thawed approach, and assign a courier with clear Drop coordinates (Wake Volcano).
4. Industrial buffering
Even before the volcano quest spikes, a small Steam Battery chest proves your Tank and Water lines actually close. If you cannot idle a surplus of Steam Batteries, you are not ready for cargo spam or caldera trips.

Steam Battery production competes for Water and Fire with seeds, ales, ordinary Batteries, and smelting. Prioritize with Automation Priority:
- Never let Steam Battery craft steal the last Fire from bonfires
- Buffer Water chests so Ice spikes do not freeze both drinks and batteries
- Cap cargo Body crafts until Storage S shows a visible surplus
How many Steam Batteries do you need?
Exact objective counts vary by seed and patch, but planning numbers that work in practice:
- A few to prove the recipe and unlock comfort
- Several reserved before building multiple Cargo Bodies
- A stacked expedition chest before the volcano push so round trips are optional, not mandatory
If you are hand-carrying one Steam Battery across the map at 12% battery, you are doing a story beat the hard way — fix corridors and couriers first (Terraforming).
