Craftomation 101 Wake the Volcano with Steam Batteries
Thaw a path, drop Steam Batteries into the caldera, and claim the new land that follows.
Waking the volcano is Craftomation 101’s signature mid-to-late milestone: prove your industrial spine works far from the rocket, then spend Steam Batteries to restart a frozen geological engine. This guide covers the exact wake method (drop Steam Battery), how melting ice creates usable land, what Brewery and logistics opportunities open afterward, and how to prepare so the expedition does not starve in sight of the crater.
Craftomation 101 is single-player on Steam for Windows, macOS, and Linux (Luden.io), with Early Access from 2024-02-19 and full release on 2026-09-14. The volcano distance changes with your procedural seed, but the recipe and drop rule do not.
Pair this page with Steam Battery, the wider Terraforming plan, and the ingredient tables on Recipes.
The wake rule (do not invent a different ritual)
How to wake the volcano: craft Steam Batteries and drop them into the volcano.
- Steam Battery = Tank + Water
- Tank = Copper + Steel Plate
- Water = Ice + Fire
Ordinary Batteries (Charged Steelplate + Water) do not substitute. Fire alone does not wake the caldera. Dragging random mid-game parts into the crater wastes a field trip. Confirm the craft chain anytime on Recipes and the production walkthrough on Steam Battery.
Bring extras. One heroic delivery rarely finishes a planetary objective, and return trips punish weak fuel plans.
Phase 0 — Prove the home base before you hike
Do not start the volcano quest as a panic button. Pre-flight checklist:
- Bonfire Fire automation still runs without you (Automate Fire habits).
- Coal Brick surplus feeds the current crew (Feed Robots).
- Copper and Steel Plate lines can idle a Tank buffer.
- Water chests stay positive while other crafts run.
- At least one courier role exists — ideally a Cargo Mate holding a Storage of Steam Batteries.
If any row fails, you are not under-volcano; you are under-industry. Fix the spine with Upgrade Path before painting a heat corridor halfway across the seed.
Phase 1 — Melt a path, not the whole planet
Ice is the map editor. Your job is a corridor to the volcano approach:
- Place Bonfires (later Steam Bonfires) to open tiles toward the frozen landmark your seed rolled.
- Keep Fire delivery automated; hand-relighting a twenty-bonfire road is how expeditions die.
- Thaw just enough for robot pathing and a staging pad near the drop tiles.
Procedural seeds move the volcano. Sometimes it feels next door; sometimes it is an arctic commute. Cargo boxes and short Pick from pads matter more on cruel seeds than on friendly ones (Terraforming).
Phase 2 — Stage Steam Batteries at the front
Workshop craft is not expedition craft. Stage like a logistics op:
- Produce Steam Batteries into Storage S at the industrial yard.
- Assign a courier (Cargo Mate preferred) to move Storage S — or repeated Steam Battery drops — to a staging Storage near the volcano.
- Program a dedicated dropper: Pick Steam Battery → Drop to volcano target tiles → energy check → Idle.
- Optionally pick two at a time (CraftoMates have two hands) and Drop twice per cycle for fewer walks.
Name robots (VolcanoDrop, BatteryBus). When the objective stalls, you should know which graph owns the Drop coordinate.
Phase 3 — Drop, confirm, restock
Execute the drops until the volcano wakes. Player-facing feedback includes melting, new heat behavior, and unlocked follow-up objectives. Keep watching battery meters — celebration walks still drain fuel.
After the wake:
- Do not delete the old Fire loop. Geological drama does not craft Coal Bricks.
- Restock Steam Batteries if later objectives still spend them.
- Reassign couriers so they are not forever pathing into an already-finished crater.
Melting ice and claiming new land
Waking the volcano accelerates the fantasy that heat was always selling: ice retreats, fresh ground appears, and previously blocked nodes become realistic work sites. Treat new land as a planning gift:
- Scout for organics (Moss, Mushroom, Wood) that were buried behind ice
- Extend Water and brick logistics before planting a forest you cannot support
- Move or clone industrial pads closer to copper/iron belts the thaw revealed
- Place new bonfires to secure the corridor so the wake does not become a one-way museum path
New land without logistics is just a prettier commute. Bring Cargo Mate routes with you.
Brewery access after the thaw
Many playthroughs see Brewery opportunities expand once the volcano wakes and organics become reachable on new ground. Primordial / Wakey / Speedy production still needs a real Brewery cell and Water automation — the volcano does not pour ales for you.
Use the opening to:
- Relocate brewing nearer Moss and Mushroom belts
- Stock Primordial Ale without strip-mining the landing woodpile
- Layer Wakey for eco sustain on the longer post-wake routes
Deep drink tactics live in Brewery Ales; fuel fundamentals stay in Feed Robots.
Failure modes unique to volcano runs
| Failure | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Wrong item dropped | Confused Battery vs Steam Battery | Recraft Tank + Water (Steam Battery) |
| Bot idles at crater empty-handed | Bad Pick from / empty staging | Refill Storage S; fix coordinates |
| Crew dies on the road | No energy branches | Bricks first (Feed Robots) |
| Corridor refreezes | Fire automation abandoned | Restore Heat1 before more drops |
| Seed feels impossible | Volcano extremely far | Cargo shuttles + tighter corridor, or retry seed |
Suggested timeline on a healthy save
- Landing heat and first CraftoMate (Getting Started)
- Fire + bricks automated
- Steel / copper / Tank industry online
- Steam Battery surplus proven
- Corridor thawed; cargo staging built
- Drop Steam Batteries until wake
- Rebase organics and Brewery on new land
- Continue terraforming goals (Terraforming)
What to read next

Wake the volcano when your factory can ignore the drama. Drop Steam Batteries on purpose, melt only the ice you need, and turn the new land into shorter supply lines — not a second abandoned campsite on warmer rock.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
How do I wake the volcano in Craftomation 101?
Craft Steam Batteries (Tank + Water) and drop them into the volcano. Ordinary Batteries do not work. See Steam Battery and Recipes.
What happens after the volcano wakes?
Ice melts more aggressively, new land opens, and follow-up opportunities such as expanded Brewery access become realistic. Continue with Terraforming.
How many Steam Batteries do I need?
Bring a surplus. Exact objective counts vary, but one battery is rarely enough for a comfortable clear — stage extras near the crater.
Should I use a Cargo Mate for the volcano run?
Yes when the walk is long. Let cargo haul a Storage of Steam Batteries while specialists craft. Guide: Cargo Mate.
Does every planet seed place the volcano the same way?
No. Seeds change distance and layout; the Steam Battery drop rule stays the same (Terraforming).
