Terraforming the Frozen Planet

Terraforming in Craftomation 101 is the long game: turn a frozen landing site into a living world by stacking heat, logistics, biology, and finally geological intervention. You will not terraform in the first hour. You will terraform because Fire never died, Coal Bricks never ran out, and your visual programs kept compounding while you unlocked the next layer.

This guide maps mid and late goals — expanding heat, planting trees, producing oxygen, crafting Steam Batteries, waking the volcano, and what “done enough” looks like after the 2026-09-14 full release. Phase 1 — Heat is territory

Ice is the map editor. Bonfires (and later Steam Bonfires) claim tiles, open soil, and create corridors toward iron, copper, ice fields, organics, and the frozen volcano.

Terraforming mindset for heat:

  • Place pits to open routes, not to paint pretty circles.
  • Keep Fire delivery automated; manual relights do not scale to a planet.
  • When Heater + Tank unlock Steam Bonfire, treat it as a denser heat tool — still fed by an automated energy story.

If heat collapses while you chase trees, you are not terraforming — you are decorating a freezer. Fix Fire first.

Phase 2 — Water, wood, and the living layer

Life needs Water:

  • Water = Ice + Fire
  • Seed = Water + Wood
  • Moss and mushroom lines unlock spores and brewery inputs

Planting trees and managing organics is a programming problem as much as a farming one. Robots need routines to deliver Water, check plants, and haul products without abandoning the brick economy. Unlock organic tools (check plant, related conditions) when your research path allows, then specialize a grower bot instead of overloading Heat1.

Trees and green cover push the fantasy forward and feed later crafts (Wood lines, ales, coal alternatives in some chains). They also punish weak fuel systems — growers walk a lot. Re-read Feed Robots before you plant a forest you cannot water.

Phase 3 — Oxygen and “the planet is changing” feedback

As heat and plants spread, oxygen and livability goals appear in objectives and environmental feedback. Exact meters can evolve across patches, but the player-facing rule is consistent: expand warmth and life together. A bald hot crater and a cold forest both fail the fantasy.

Practical advice:

  • Expand heat just ahead of planting so seedlings are not stranded on ice.
  • Automate Water before mass seeding.
  • Keep a surplus of Coal Bricks; biology is a new battery tax.
  • Use Automation Priority when plant chores start stealing hands from Fire.

Phase 4 — Industrial prep for the volcano

Waking the volcano is a logistics raid disguised as a story beat. You will need a mid-game industrial spine:

  • Steel = Iron + Fire; plates, magnets, charged plates
  • Copper smelting (Copper Ore + Fire), wires, chips
  • Tank = Copper + Steel Plate
  • Steam Battery = Tank + Water
  • Supporting parts: Battery, Radiolamp, Body/Head for more CraftoMates, Cargo Mate for box hauling

Cargo Mates exist to move storages so your Steam Battery line can sit near Water and metal without every worker crossing the seed. Build cargo when brick income can feed the heavier chassis.

Follow Upgrade Path so you unlock manufacturing in an order that does not starve heat. Many failed volcano runs are actually failed Steel or Water runs wearing a volcano costume.

Phase 5 — Wake the volcano with Steam Batteries

The frozen volcano is a destination on your procedural seed — sometimes close, sometimes a thawed expedition. Objectives commonly ask you to melt a path, then deliver Steam Batteries into the volcano.

How to wake it: craft Steam Batteries (Tank + Water) and drop them into the volcano. Bring extras; one delivery rarely finishes a planetary milestone, and round trips are expensive on battery.

Preparation checklist:

  1. Fire and Water automation trustworthy.
  2. Copper + Steel Plate → Tank line stocked.
  3. Steam Battery crafter or function tested near storage.
  4. Heat corridor thawed to the volcano approach.
  5. Courier (ideally Cargo Mate) assigned with clear Drop coordinates.
  6. Fuel surplus for the expedition crew.

After the volcano wakes, expect new heat dynamics and late objectives. Keep the old Fire loop alive — geological drama does not feed Coal Bricks for you.

Procedural seeds rearrange resource belts, building ruins, and volcano distance. If your seed is cruel, terraform with corridors and cargo, not with wishful Find and pick across half the map. Share seeds that feel fair; retry seeds that strand Coal behind impossible ice if you want a teaching game rather than a commute simulator.

  • Planting before Water automation — seedlings die while you debug.
  • Volcano push before Tank/Water surplus — heroic one-way trips.
  • Ignoring Feed Robots during long melts — expedition dies in sight of the caldera.
