Brewery and Ales Guide

Coal Bricks keep early CraftoMates alive. Brewery ales are how mid-game crews fine-tune eco and turbo behavior instead of slamming every slider and praying the battery meter forgives you. This guide covers unlocking and using the Brewery, crafting Primordial Ale, understanding Wakey versus Speedy drinks, and deciding when ales are worth the Water and organics they spend.

Craftomation 101 is a single-player Steam game from Luden.io (Windows, macOS, Linux) that entered Early Access on 2024-02-19 and left it on 2026-09-14. Nobody else will restock your Moss while you admire a Speedy buff.

If bricks still fail, stop here and finish Feed Robots plus Automate Fire. Ales amplify a stable fuel economy; they do not replace one.

Unlocking the Brewery

The Brewery is a station craft, not an open-ground combine. Primordial Ale and the Wakey/Speedy family expect Brewery processing — treating them like Stone + Stone on bare ice is a common failure mode called out on the Recipes page.

Practical unlock path most saves follow:

  1. Stabilize Fire, Water (Ice + Fire), and Coal Bricks.
  2. Push heat and organics so Wood, Moss, and Mushroom are reachable without suicide walks.
  3. Bring the Brewery online as a dedicated cell with clear inputs and an output Storage.
  4. After larger thaws — especially once you wake the volcano and claim new land — expand brewing capacity near richer organic belts.

Exact research labels can shift with patches, but the player rule stays stable: Brewery recipes fail if you ignore the Brewery. Pair brewing with the first-hour habits from Getting Started so Water and Fire already exist before you invent a drink menu.

Primordial Ale: the brewing backbone

Primordial Ale = Wood + Water (Brewery)

Primordial Ale is the strong mid fuel / brewing base listed on the Blue row. It matters in two ways:

  • As a drinkable fuel step once bricks feel thin for longer routes
  • As an ingredient for upgraded Wakey Ale 2 and Speedy Ale 2 recipes that spend Primordial Ale instead of plain Water

Do not divert every Wood into Primordial the moment the Brewery appears. Wood also feeds Seed = Water + Wood and spore lines that support planting. Sequence Primordial after Water is automated and Wood income is boringly positive.

Program a small brewery loop: fetch Wood, fetch Water, deliver into Brewery / combine per your unlocked blocks, Drop Primordial Ale into a labeled Storage. Keep that graph out of Heat1 — mixing ale logic into fire sustain is how bases become unreadable.

Wakey Ale vs Speedy Ale

DrinkTypical recipeBuff role
Wakey Ale 1Moss + WaterEco mode for ~60 seconds
Wakey Ale 2Moss + Primordial AleLonger eco window (~240 seconds)
Speedy Ale 1Mushroom + WaterTurbo mode for ~60 seconds
Speedy Ale 2Mushroom + Primordial AleLonger turbo window (~240 seconds)

Wakey pushes efficiency: slower, thriftier operation that stretches battery on long boring loops (steady Fire feeding, brick crafting, calm Water runs). Speedy pushes haste: finish a haul, clear a backlog, or catch a volcano staging window — then return to normal gears before the buff ends and the drain cliff appears.

These drinks pair with the robot eco / turbo speed settings described in Feed Robots. Ale buffs are timed; gear choices are sticky. Use both deliberately:

  • Default crew on eco gears + occasional Wakey for sustain shifts
  • Situational turbo gears + Speedy for planned sprints only when fuel income can pay the bill

Never “Speedy everything.” A turbo courier on a starved brick line faceplants farther from home than an eco bot would.

When to use each drink

Use Primordial Ale when

  • Brick stockpiles exist but long industrial walks still chip batteries harder than you like
  • You are preparing Wakey 2 / Speedy 2 and need a buffered Primordial chest
  • A nurse bot can distribute drinks without interrupting Fire

Use Wakey when

  • Heat and brick loops should run for long stretches with minimal babysitting
  • You are expanding organics or watering trees and want thrift over speed
  • Overnight-style AFK-friendly sustain matters more than burst throughput

Use Speedy when

  • A thaw corridor must reach copper, ice, or the volcano approach on a deadline
  • You are relocating storages after a heat push and want one fast reshuffle
  • A backlog of Tank / Steam Battery crafts is blocking a milestone and fuel surplus is obvious

Do not use ales when

  • Coal Bricks are not automated yet
  • Water still depends on hand-crafted Fire
  • You are about to assemble three new CraftoMates with no food plan (Getting Started still applies)

Brewery cell design

Aim for a readable island:

  1. Water input chest fed by Ice + Fire automation (Automate Fire stays upstream)
  2. Wood / Moss / Mushroom inputs with short Pick from paths
  3. Brewery station tile(s) with unambiguous Drop to coordinates
  4. Output Storage split by drink type if you can spare the glass/steel
  5. Optional nurse CraftoMate that only Compare energy / feed mate / hand ales to named workers

Cargo Mates help later by walking drink boxes to distant yards so line workers never path to the Brewery for lunch — but cargo is optional until the commute hurts.

Automation checklist

  1. Water loop trustworthy before mass Moss/Mushroom drinks.
  2. Primordial Ale buffered before unlocking Ale 2 crafts as a dependency.
  3. Every drinking program still has a brick fallback — ales are layered fuel, not the only fuel.
  4. Eco default; Speedy is a scheduled tool.
  5. Brewery graph named and separate from Heat1 / Brick1.
  6. After volcano thaw, relocate or clone the brewery toward richer organics (Wake Volcano).

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

How do I make Primordial Ale in Craftomation 101?

Combine Wood + Water at the Brewery. It is a Brewery recipe, not a bare-ground craft. Full tables: Recipes.

What is the difference between Wakey Ale and Speedy Ale?

Wakey buffs eco-style efficiency; Speedy buffs turbo speed for a limited window. Details and gears: Feed Robots.

Should ales replace Coal Bricks?

No. Automate Coal Bricks first, then layer ales for mid-game tuning. See Feed Robots and Automate Fire.

When should I drink Speedy Ale?

Use Speedy for short, planned sprints when fuel surplus is obvious — not as a permanent global speed-up.

Does waking the volcano help brewing?

Waking the volcano melts ice and opens new land, which often improves organic access for Moss, Mushrooms, and Wood. See Wake Volcano.
